KYOSHI, ASHGABAT: A shocking video from Turkmenistan shows a violent man beating his wife after spotting her at a beauty salon. The incident occurred at a makeshift salon in the Kyoshi district near Turkmenistan’s capital city Ashgabat. This comes after President Serdar Berdymukhammedov recently introduced a new law curtailing women’s rights in the country after he came to power in March 2022.

According to the law, husbands can be fined if their wives receive certain beauty or cosmetic treatments. Turkmenistan is widely known for its poor record on human rights, especially minority rights. The country is also famous for its widespread corruption in the administration. Police have detained a lot of women for using false nails and eyelashes, or other beauty accessories or products. In addition, they have also caught women who they felt have used lip fillers and other cosmetic adjustments. Beauticians or stylists who are offering cosmetic services even face jail for doing their duties in Turkmenistan.

The video show the furious man shouting at his wife and says, “How long have we been looking for you? You can’t go ****ing around….”, reports Daily Mail. In the beginning, he pushes her and leaves, but after he returns and physically assaults her which leaves the wife cowering on the floor. However, the customers and beauticians were too scared to intervene.

Cutting or dyeing hair, eyelash extensions, manicures, or beauty injections or surgery have become taboo in this society. Women are also forced to wear traditional Turkmen dress, and a ban has been imposed on padded bras as well.

Netizens were quick to respond to the video. A user stated, “Oh my Lord, that’s not a man!!”. Also, another user claimed, “Time the Women in these countries got together and showed these so called men up for what they really are – Same way the women in the suffragette did for us women in the UK years ago!”.

Another stated, “In counties like Turkmenistan that is impossible. The only thing that will benefit women there is complete overthrow of their personality cult order and replacement with real governance. As there is no benefit to anyone to invade them it will not happen.” “Really! the man punched his wife for going to a salon? I am confused: is this what it entails to being a wife? To be treated like that in public? God knows what happens to that woman at home. Shocking abuses I am sure happen.” added another tweet.
