Rosemary oil is all the rage these days. You have probably seen an ad on social media about its healing properties. Or maybe you know someone in your life who raves about what rosemary oil did for them personally.
If you have been wanting to take the plunge and try rosemary oil for hair care, there has never been a better time. There are many great brands on the market offering rosemary oil that will turn your lackluster locks into a luscious mane. We did you a favor and rounded up 10 of the best rosemary oils for hair growth.
1. Blu Atlas Hair & Body Oil
Rosemary oil performs best when combined with other oils. Blu Atlas uses more than 10 oils in their Hair & Body Oil, making this one one of the most effective products on the market.
Blu Atlas Hair & Body Oil is one of the best rosemary oils for hair growth available today. In addition to rosemary oil, Blu Atlas formulated this product with saw palmetto oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, castor oil, geranium oil, pumpkin seed oil, jojoba oil, lavender seed oil, avocado oil, bhringraj oil and neem oil.
This gentle blend of clean oils works to smooth and deeply hydrate hair at the root, while providing the same benefits to your scalp, face and wherever else on your body you wish to apply it. All it takes is a few drops in the palms of your hands, spread evenly from the roots to the ends. In a few months, you’ll begin to see a healthy shine and a cleaner scalp.
2. Indian Castor Rosemary Hair Oil by Soulflower
There are a lot of “100% pure vegan” and “completely organic” products out there, especially in the emerging market of natural hair supplements, oils and creams. Some of these products are the real deal. Others, unfortunately, are less than stellar when it comes to their ingredients. However, that is not the case with Soulflower Coldpressed Indian Castor Rosemary Hair Nourishment Oil.
Soulflower is a hidden gem in the world of 100% vegan and organic products. They use barebones ingredients that are clean, simple and effective. This therapeutic-grade, handmade hair oil provides your scalp with much-needed moisture, dandruff removal, hair follicle purification and root strength.
To experience its full effectiveness, take a small amount of oil and massage it directly on your scalp, roots and hair. A teaspoon is usually enough when starting out. Note: If you have a sensitive scalp, use just a few drops to see if it will irritate your scalp before applying a larger amount. Ninety-seven percent pure castor oil and 3% distilled rosemary essential oil pack a punch, so this product may not be suitable for all skin types.
3. UpNature Rosemary Essential Oil
Many of you probably know of essential oils from those tiny glass bottles your mom uses for an air diffuser in every room in the house. While they do serve a purpose as an effective air freshener and candle replacement, essential oils are also used for hair-care and skincare routines. When combined with other hair and skincare products, essential oils provide a boost of what your hair and skin may be lacking (and they just smell so good).
UpNature Rosemary Essential Oil is GMO free, PETA certified and made in the USA. So, off the bat, you know this is a higher tier of essential oil compared to the mass-produced supermarket equivalent your mom is fond of. UpNature uses 100% pure, therapeutic-grade rosemary oil that is steam-distilled from the Rosmarinus officinalis herb. UpNature gets it right from the source, without any additives, toxins or harmful chemicals.
Pure rosemary oil is the ideal choice if you’re looking for an oil to add to your existing hair routine. Rosemary extract is known for its tonic properties that help stimulate stubborn hair follicles to not only lengthen hair but also to strengthen each strand at the root. As a bonus, rosemary may be able to slow graying and minimize hair loss, all while giving your scalp the moisture it deserves.
4. OKAY Black Jamaican Castor Oil With Rosemary
OKAY is known for their creative castor oil–based products, and this particular oil from the castor oil experts has us really excited. OKAY Black Jamaican Castor Oil with Rosemary offers all the effectiveness of castor oil, with the added benefit of rosemary.
Black Jamaican Castor Oil is known to promote hair to grow back stronger, prevent hair strands from breaking, and soothe dry and itchy scalp. Rosemary works to stimulate blood circulation around your scalp’s pores and hair follicles, which in turn promotes hair growth and even more scalp nourishment. Rosemary also moisturizes the scalp, prevents hair and skin sheddings, and even slows the graying of the hair in some cases.
So, what could make rosemary oil and castor oil even better? Try it hot! For a deep treatment, warm the oil before application. After warming, apply thoroughly to the scalp and let it sit until absorbed. Repeat one to two times weekly at first to see how your scalp reacts. For best results, stay consistent with your applications.
This oil is affordable and is one of the most obtainable oils on this list. Most big box stores can ship it to your house for around $10. Give your wallet a break and treat your hair with one of the best rosemary oils for hair growth.
5. Aromatica Rosemary Root Enhancer
Aromatica Rosemary Root Enhancer uses the power of rosemary to create a sense of unison between skin, body and mind. Not only does this root-revitalizing scalp spray benefit your overall well-being through its pleasant aroma, but it also removes buildup, dead skin and dirt that clog up your scalp’s pores and hair follicles.
The journey to hair growth starts with a clean scalp, and rosemary, combined with salicylic acid and black food complex (black rice, black bean, black sesame, eggplant, mulberry and pepper), works to keep the scalp cleansed and nourished. This means your hair follicles have less to fight. The easier you make it for your hair, the more encouraged it will be to grow at a normal and healthy rate.
If you’re looking for spa-like results for hair growth without spa-like prices, Aromatica has the aromatherapeutic rosemary scalp spray your roots have been begging for.
6. Vegan Mia – Organic Hair Oil Treatment With Castor Oil, Jojoba Oil and Rosemary Oil
Vegan products are all the rage these days, similar to how everything in the 2010s was gluten-free and non-GMO. However, most of these new vegan products are just capitalizing on the hype, are absurdly expensive and unobtainable, or are not actually vegan (yes, you read that right). We’re pleased to report that Vegan Mia Organics is the real deal.
Vegan Mia Organics was started in 2015 by a certified aromatherapist named Life who was raised in a real-life hippie commune in Los Angeles and Hawaii during the 1970s – you can’t get any more OG than that! You can trust that Vegan Mia Organics offers real vegan and organic products. One of our favorite products from the brand is their Shine No. 18 Nourishing Hair & Scalp Oil Treatment.
This organic hair oil treatment is formulated with a scientifically backed blend of rosemary essential oil, lavender essential oil, cedarwood essential oil and thyme essential oil, which has been proven to noticeably increase hair growth after seven months of use. Meanwhile, organic castor oil helps control frizz, organic jojoba oil treats dry scalp and Moroccan argan oil goes to work repairing split ends. All oils are USDA-certified organic and PETA-certified vegan and cruelty-free.
7. Difeel Rosemary and Mint Premium Hair Oil With Biotin
Difeel is known by hair-care aficionados as a go-to brand for all things oil related. Castor oil, biotin oil and, of course, rosemary oil…you name it, they have it.
Our favorite product from Difeel is their made-in-the-USA Rosemary & Mint Premium Hair Oil. This hair-growth oil is infused with powerhouse ingredient biotin, which is critical to the health of your skin, nails and hair. A lack of biotin can potentially lead to hair loss, so any product that contains it is a step above the rest.
While biotin works to nourish your scalp, rosemary and mint work to repair dry and damaged hair to help promote its strength and growth. Rosemary also provides moisture and shine without leaving a greasy residue. Mint’s role in this hair growth oil is invigoration and aromatherapy. Not only does its aroma please the senses, its tingling feel helps invigorate your scalp’s pore and hair follicles to promote hair growth.
This product is one of the best rosemary oils for hair growth on the market today.
8. Rowe Casa Organics Hair Growth Spray
If you’ve tried a number of hair-growth oils and feel like rubbing oil onto your scalp isn’t for you, then treat yourself with Rowe Casa Organics Hair Growth Spray. Unlike oils, sprays offer a misty, non-messy application experience that is perfect for those on the go or who already have enough natural oils present in their scalp and hair. But just because this product isn’t your typical hair oil, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the benefits of one.
Infused in this light and airy hair spritz is the same anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antifungal rosemary essential oil present in traditional hair oils. Whether it’s dandruff, build-up, dry and itchy scalp, hair loss or even graying, rosemary is there to get your hair scalp back on track. But that’s not all that Rowe Casa is packing.
Also present in this hair spritz is cedarwood. Cedarwood essential oil targets your scalp’s pores and hair follicles by cleansing them and helping balance out oil-producing glands. Balanced glands means less greasy hair, clean pores mean less build-up and tightened hair follicles mean less dandruff. Lavender is also present, for its soothing scent as well as its scalp-soothing properties.
And if that doesn’t sell you, the spray also contains tea tree oil and witch hazel, both of which help promote blood flow circulation around your hair follicles and prevent buildup, flakes and itchy scalp.
9. Brooklyn Botany Rosemary Essential Oil
Sometimes you already have a good thing going in your hair-care routine, and you might be afraid to spoil things by adding a new product that messes everything up. The old adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” really does hold up, but that doesn’t mean you can’t safely experiment. Instead of introducing a product that is a blend of multiple ingredients, try out a pure oil.
Brooklyn Botany Rosemary Oil is 100% distilled from Rosmarinus officinalis. That means it’s rosemary oil and nothing else. Brooklyn Botany essential oils are all of the earth with no additives or dilution, making them potent and effective.
Brooklyn Botany goes the extra mile and has all of their therapeutic and premium grade essential oils tested by an independent lab to ensure their potency and efficiency before they go to market. Since this 100% rosemary oil is so strong, it must be used with a carrier oil.
10. Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Shine Pomade for Curly, Damaged, Natural Hair
Carol’s Daughter has been in the hair-care game for 30 years now, so they need no introduction. Chances are you’ve seen their products lining store shelves, know someone who uses them or you use them yourself. If it’s the latter, you don’t need us to tell you how effective they are, but we will let you in on their best-kept secret.
Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey is not a traditional hair oil; rather, it’s a shine pomade that is formulated for dry, brittle and textured hair. If that sounds like your hair, you know that oils and spritz sprays don’t offer the moisture your hair needs (and your hair needs plenty of it). But because Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey is one of the best rosemary oils for hair growth, it’s going to satisfy your needs.
This pleasantly citrus-scented pomade moisturizes frizzy and dull hair, hydrates the scalp and controls unruly hair. It can take the place of a leave-in conditioner, moisturizer and styling cream. But, like hair oils, it has all the benefits thanks to the infused rosemary alongside the ultra-hydrating shea and cocoa butters.
What is rosemary?
Rosemary, native to the Mediterranean region, has been used by humans dating back to 5000 BCE. So, for at least 7,000 years, we’ve been relying on rosemary for ritual, cooking, fragrance, cosmetic and medicinal use. Greek scholars would even wear garlands of rosemary to improve their memory.
After thousands of years of ritual and medicinal use, rosemary was cultivated for use as a spice, and for 500 years we’ve been using it, and the oil derived from it, to make up for our lack of cooking expertise.
How does rosemary oil help hair?
When distilled into an oil, rosemary helps treat a multitude of hair-related concerns. Just one little bottle can be used for a whole host of issues, which means you can save on money and shelf space.
Grow Out Your Hair
Since you’re reading this article, you know that rosemary oil is one of the best products to use for hair growth. Rosemary oil is known to treat androgenetic alopecia, which primarily affects men, by preventing a byproduct of testosterone from harming the hair follicles. Rosemary oil helps grow out your hair, giving you fuller locks. It also helps reduce itchiness, dryness and flakiness.
You can find rosemary oil at many health stores, both brick-and-mortar and online. Some rosemary oil comes pre-diluted, meaning you can apply the product straight to your hair without adding any additional products. Some rosemary oils, however, require you to use a carrier oil. Like most oils, rosemary oil is potent and can irritate the skin if not properly diluted.
You can use coconut oil, argan oil or almond oil to dilute the rosemary oil. Apply a few drops of the rosemary oil to the carrier oil and then apply a few drops of the mixture to your scalp and massage it through your hair. Leave the mixture on your head for around 10 minutes and then rinse and wash your hair.
If you repeat this process several times a week, you will notice your hair increase in length, volume and strength. If, however, your scalp and skin get irritated or you notice your hair feels brittle, discontinue use and consult a medical professional.
You can also apply rosemary oil directly into your shampoo and conditioner, if you wish. As mentioned above, make sure you dilute the rosemary oil, if needed, and apply a few drops evenly throughout the desired product. This way, you are getting a full dose of extra-strength hair growth treatment each time you wash and condition your hair.
Clarifies and Cleanses
Rosemary oil is highly effective at cleansing and clarifying hair. Dirt, oil, sebum, dead skin cells, buildup and other impurities get lodged in hair follicles. This causes hair to look dirty and greasy, which nobody wants.
Shampoos are great at cleansing the hair, but sometimes you need an additional product that strips away the residue and impurities the shampoo leaves behind. That’s where rosemary oil comes in. Rosemary oil is naturally clarifying, which means it’s going to rejuvenate your hair.
If your hair is in desperate need of TLC, apply a few drops of rosemary oil to a carrier oil and allow it to sit on your scalp for around 10 minutes. While it sits there, its cleansing properties will quickly get to work, stripping away all the nasty stuff.
Your hair will look shiny, clean and restored after just one use. You can use rosemary oil as a clarifying cleanser once a week and then slowly build up to using it more often if your skin and hair are adapting well.
Add Some Shine
Rosemary oil is great at making your hair look salon-styled. You do not have to pay big bucks to get a professional treatment when you can just use rosemary oil. Rosemary oil is great at bringing out the properties in your hair that make it shiny and bouncy.
Especially during dry, cold months, you may notice that your hair is more dull and brittle. Sure, you could use other hair-care products to add shine and volume, but those quickly become expensive. The great thing about rosemary oil is that one bottle will last you a long time because it’s super concentrated. With each use, you only need a few drops.
You already know the drill. Get your favorite carrier oil and apply a few drops of rosemary oil. We suggest using coconut oil as your carrier oil if you want intense shine. Coconut oil on its own will make your hair sparkly and youthful, but with the powers of rosemary oil, the possibilities are endless.
You can either lather and massage the diluted rosemary oil through your hair or apply some of the product and wear a shower cap for up to 10 minutes. Then rinse out the product and style as desired. You can even use a rosemary oil hair spray or styling spray to add shine. You will be amazed at how lovely your hair looks after one wash. To continue giving your hair the best results, use rosemary oil as needed or at least once a week.
Detangle Those Knots
If you have thick hair, curls or waves, you know firsthand how annoying tangles and knots can be. If you have had an intense sweat session at the gym or just got out of the shower, you may be left with a pile of knots and tangles.
Have no fear, rosemary oil is here. Rosemary oil is great at getting tangles and knots out of your hair. It works by saturating the hair with its healing qualities, loosening up any buildup that may be increasing the tangles.
We love using rosemary oil as a detangler spray by using a liquid carrier oil, like argan, and applying a few drops of rosemary oil to the blend. Use a spray bottle and spritz the blend evenly across your scalp and head, targeting the areas with the most tangles and knots.
You can either let the rosemary oil sit for a few minutes or use a comb to start gently working your way through the knots. If the knots are extra tricky, simply apply a few more sprays of rosemary oil and soon your hair will be tangle-free. After you’ve brushed and combed out your hair, style it as desired.
